CHRISTOPHER O’LEARY

ALTER EGOS

Alter Egos was a dynamic video that was generated by measuring the flow of traffic through the installation. The video projection consisted of a fictional audience comprised of fun and strange characters referring to science fiction and comic book culture.  Visitors to the installation were suddenly placed within the spectral world of Alter Egos. The project acted as a window between the real world and a speculative one – an alter ego to Glow and its audience as a whole.

Christopher O’Leary explores notions of human potential through the lens of speculative fiction, comic book culture and the histories of art and technology. His works of video, photography and interactive media engage in humorous and critical looks at heroism, villainy, technology and super-power applied to the human form. His project for Glow is a video-based time machine, connecting Glow’s present audience with one from a fictional future. O’Leary’s work has been shown in Seattle, Los Angeles, Belgrade, and Istanbul, and, in 2009, he had his first solo exhibition in Rome, Italy. He holds an appointment as Lecturer of Digital Photography at UCLA’s Department of Design Media Arts. O’Leary received his MFA from UCLA in 2008, and lives and works in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. www.chrisoleary.net
