PREDOCK FRANE
LUMINOUS PASSAGE
Luminous Passage was a200’ long structure consisting of a minimal and elegant cable system used to support electroluminescent wire composed in such a way as to create a porous “land bridge” taking people from the end of the Bay Street boardwalk almost to the shore. Luminous Passage offered the audience a transition from the hardscape of the urban environment to the open and natural spaces we find at the shore.
Established by Hadrian Predock and John Frane in 2000, Predock_Frane Architects is a collaborative research and development design studio. The work of their practice ranges from small scale installations to large public venues. Seeking to open new territories for locality and specificity, they utilize a process of “generative repetition,” a methodology that focuses on mapping specific existing morphologies, actions, systems, and material conditions, then generating and forecasting new architectural results based upon their findings. Predock_Frane was named one of ten emerging architectural firms by Architectural Record, and, in 2005, one of six emerging international firms by the Architectural League in New York. They were selected to represent the United States in the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and participated in the Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial – Design Life Now. Recent solo exhibitions include the L.A. Forum Gallery, and the Pomona College Museum of Art. Predock has a master’s degree from Harvard, and Frane has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Texas. Both Predock and Frane live and work in Santa Monica.
